Cowboys Hire Bruce Read As Special Teams Coach

The Dallas Cowboys hired former Oregon State assistant Bruce Read on Thursday to coach special teams on Wade Phillips' staff.

Read, who spent the past three years in the same role at Oregon State, is the sixth coach Phillips has added since taking over for Bill Parcells this month.

The Cowboys are the third NFL stop for Read, who also coached special team at San Diego from 1999-2001 and for the New York Giants in 2002 and 2003. He replaces Bruce DeHaven, who left after last season to coach special teams for Seattle.

Sources inside the Dallas Cowboys organization confirmed to CBS 11 on Thursday that Wade Phillips will become the team's next head coach.

Early Thursday media reports leaked the news while Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones denied any such job offers.

When Jones arrived at Valley Ranch about 9 a.m. Thursday, he said: "I have not offered the job to anybody." But two and a half hours later, a source inside the organization confirmed that Phillips will get the job.

Rich Dalrymple, the team's public relations director, reiterated that message about an hour later.

Jones: No Job Offers Yet

Despite reports Jerry Jones has pegged Wade Phillips to be the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, the team owner denied any such job offers had been made.

In the early morning hours, other media reported Phillips arrived in Dallas to complete contract details.

When Jones arrived at Valley Ranch Thursday morning, he said: "I have not offered the job to anybody."

Jones has interviewed 10 men for the head coaching job. The latest was Colts' assistant head coach Jim Caldwell on Wednesday.
