Do agents ruin the game?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007
I'm not sure if everyone has heard it yet but there's a pretty big rumor floating that Tony Romo's new agent, Tom Condon, has requested a guaranteed $30 million to be included in a new Romo deal. Romo is a free agent after this year and many believe he will be tagged as the franchise player, which means he'll get at least $10.7 million for one year.

If Condon asks for that kind of money, it would put Romo in the same category as Peyton Manning, for whom Condon is also an agent. How ironic. Manning is signed to 2012. His largest salary will be in 2010 at $15.8 million. One league source allegedly said Condon and Romo would have accepted Matt Schaub-range money, which is six years, $48 million with $7 million guaranteed and $20 million over three years if something had gotten done before the season started. But that is impractical to think the Cowboys management would do that.

I am one of the fans who argued against giving Romo a longterm contract after his performance last year, and said the management should wait. It's a dicey proposition and one the Cowboys have failed on too many times over the past 10 years. Quincy Carter, Drew Bledsoe and Drew Henson all stunk it up.

I couldn't imagine losing Romo next year. But these agents are pugnacious and can squeeze blood from turnips. I think they ruin the game. But then again, I think I have been a horrible negotiator for my own pay, and if I had an agent maybe I'd me making a few thousand more (which is millions more in football terms).

So, the question is: How will Romo handle this? How will the Cowboys handles this? A 10-year, $90 million deal? A 7-year, $85 million deal? A five-year, $75 million deal? Will Romo hold out? Will he fight? Will mid-season negotiations screw everything up? Or will we move smoothly and sign him mid-season so that everyone is happy.

After three games, Romo appears to be the real deal. But is he worth $100 million dollars?

Going with Dallas right for Romo

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Irving, Texas - Tony Romo could have been a Bronco. As a free agent, he had a choice between Dallas and Denver when he went undrafted out of Eastern Illinois in 2003. The Broncos offered Romo a $20,000 signing bonus. The Cowboys offered $10,000. "It was never about the money," Romo, the Cowboys' Pro Bowl quarterback, said Wednesday. "But I almost signed with the Broncos. ... I think I made the ...

Romo on ESPN

Thursday, July 12th, 2007
Tony Romo was on ESPN this afternoon. He says he doesn't feel the pressure the media writes about and "either you are good enough to do this or you are not."

Well, we all hope Romo is good enough to do it. Romo is seeking a new contract. He's up at the end of the season.

I loved the question of what are his chances of being the ball holder for field goals and extra points. Romo apparently loved it too, because he laughed.

"I think they went from 1 percent to zero," he said. "I think my time at holding has definitely passed and for good reason."

You gotta love a guy who can admit his mistakes, take responsibility for it and not let it destroy his psyche.

Len Pasquarelli was on after and he said negotiations have been real slow.

"I think things will heat up right at the end of the training camp," he said. "If you don't resign Tony Romo, who is your quarterback? There really are no other alternatives."

NFC East training camp challenges

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Dallas Cowboys Challenge No. 1: Build the offense around the strengths of Tony Romo . Romo led the Cowboys to the playoffs and earned a Pro Bowl nomination as a first-year starter. His 65-percent completion percentage and 95.1 passer rating both ranked near the top of the league. With that kind of production, it's obvious that the Cowboys should build their offense around the Romo's strengths. ...

Romo Ready to Be Taken off Another Type of Market?

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

While Tony Romo awaits word of a possible new contract with the Cowboys, word is he is ready to settle down. RealityTVWorld.com says that Romo and former American Idol champion Carrie Underwood are close to getting engaged. The report says that at first Romo wanted to take a break from their realtionship, but now has changed his mind and is ready to commit forever to the country star. “They’ve been talking about getting engaged and it’s probably going to happen soon,” the report said. Underwood was all over TV last year on Thanksgiving as the Cowboys played their annual home game that day, and she was pronounced as Romo’s girlfriend.

Cowboys Should Think Twice About a New Deal for Romo

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

While the Dallas Cowboys get set for what should be a very interesting 2007 season, one of the big question marks right now is if the team should indeed give new starting QB Tony Romo and long term deal.  The Cowboys giving Romo a long term deal is a decision that may shape the future of the franchise.  If Romo is the quarterback that he was when the was bringing the Cowboys back from the dead last season, or is the QB who down the stretch was way off as the Cowboys lost three of four to lose the division.  Then of course there was the nightmare in Seattle, when Romo dropped a snap that could have put the Cowboys ahead late in the game.  The concern has to come with what Romo did in December, with the division on the line.  He threw six TD’s in the month, compared to 8 interceptions.  His completion percentage was just 60 percent, and his QB rating was 77.1.

This may have been the true Romo with how he played in those December games.  After all, there was a reason why he sat the bench as long as he did, and coaches were leery of putting him in live action.  Sure, he had his moments in October and November, when he and the Cowboys won five of six, but overall, this is a decision that the team had better not make lightly.  If you commit to Romo, and he ends up being that December QB you are in trouble.  Tread lightly Dallas, this is a decision that could easily shape the next 2-3 years of Cowboys football.
